I saw these Sandhill Cranes as I walked today and their beauty turned my mind to think of one of Wisconsin's leaders in the environmental movement: Aldo Leopold, writer of A Sand County Almanac. I thought of some words he wrote:
"Our ability to perceive quality in nature begins as in art with the pretty. It expands through successive stages of the beautiful to values as yet uncaptured by language. The quality of cranes lies, I think, in this higher gamut, as yet beyond the reach of words." I wonder what he would say today? How would he call us to an environmental and human ethic today? I invite you to read some of his works. If nothing else, do an internet search and read some of his more famous quotes.
