Is there light at the end of your tunnel? Do you still have hope?
Abraham Lincoln, a year before he was elected president, said: "It is said an Eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent him a sentence, to be ever in view, and which should be true and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him the words: "And this, too, shall pass away." How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction!"

Venture into the woods and discover. When you discover what lies therein, you will discover why so many souls seek to protect and preserve it.
I recently saw these words from Bob Jauch and they seem so fitting for today: "I refuse to allow the dread of darkness deny me illumination of light. Life is a sea of change and we must not lose sight of natural beauty and the goodness of others who have enabled us to learn, grow and succeed."
Every day is an adventure into the mists of the future. We may think we may know where the paths of life will take us. We may worry about the dangerous roads that lie before us.
Should we face the new day with dread and fear? Should anticipation of difficulties freeze us into inaction? Have hope. Fear not. Act Justly. Love mercy. Walk humbly into this new day. "You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty." Gandhi
The cold harsh winds of winter blow across the landscape. As the sun sets, this tree will be plunged into darkness. At times, we may feel our lives are struggling through a simliar situation. Don't give up hope. The dawn will come. The harshness of winter will be chased away by the warmth of spring. Hope lives.
This may seem like a strange image to start a new year, but there is much here to consider.
A New Year dawns. It has the promise of beauty that is symbolized by the sunrise. Yet it also has the potential of divison and pain that is symbolized by the fence. My prayer for you this year is that you will experience the beauty and joy which surrounds us, and that you will work to tear down the hatred and suffering that separates us. |
