As the sun lifts its glory above the eastern horizon, the heat of the day begins to build. Within hours the day will be heavy with humidity. Some people call these the "dog days of summer" and that brings to my mind the days of my youth growing up on the family farm. In my mind, I can see the dogs sprawled on the grass in the shade of tall trees, yet panting heavily as they yearn for relief from the hot and humid air. The best activity, was no activity. It was a good time to sit quietly and watch the world, or perhaps to sit and read a good book. Time seemed to slow and yet the world grew.
Those memories bring a smile to my face. Enjoy these sultry days of summer as you slow down and look at the world around you.

When I saw this construction at a nature center's children's playground, I couldn't help but think of "In a hole in the ground there lived . . ."
Yes, those are the opening words of The Hobbit - one of my favorite books. Books take us on adventures and leave lasting impressions on us. I hope you find something good to read and that it leaves a powerful impression for good upon you. Have you ever had one of those days when you feel as though the vultures are gathering in anticipation of feasting on you? Don't give up. Vultures are carrion and will wait for you to give up and die. So if you feel down, don't give up. Deny them the feast.
This hidden falls in the woods was a delight. While other people gathered about it (it is located in a state park) there was a sense of solitude and serenity about it.
What gave it that sense? Was it the beauty of the place? The uniqueness of the experience? The sound of the waters? The dappled sunlight filtering through the trees? Perhaps it was the time. It compels one to sit and watch. Sit still for some moments today and watch the world around you. May you have peace. While walking through the woods, I stumbled across this beauty. I don't know its name - only that it has a beauty all its own. May you see beauty in your world today!
