I suspect this will be my last sunrise canoe outing of the season. The weather is supposed to turn colder, and all too soon there will be ice on the lake. So take the time and enjoy this moment.

It is early November and the mid-day sun is already riding so low in the southern sky. It is now as low as it will be in the cold winter days of late January. Today the temperatures happen to be far above average for this time of year, but the sun doesn't lie. It is a harbinger of the descent into darkness. As we enter these months of lesser light some of us might want them to "fly by" so that we might soon again enjoy the bright days of summer.
But I wonder, perhaps we should find ways to enjoy the times of lesser light, rather than to try to escape it, or quickly pass through it. It is something to consider. The image of this tree saddens me. I tend to like unique things and I like that it is different than its surroundings, but I know that it lies in marshy ground and that this leaning is an indication that it will soon lose too much of the grasp of its roots and will topple to the soil.
Is this what happens to us when we lose our spiritual roots? May your spirit roots be firmly set in the love of the divine. |
