Many years ago this tree suffered a terrible accident that broke it and bent it over. But in spite of its tragedy it continued to grow. It wasn't as straight and tall as before, but it has a strength, uniqueness, and beauty all of its own.
Don't let the hard times break you. Let your strength, uniqueness, and beauty carry you through.

When the sumac starts turning color we know the summer days are waning. We can enjoy what remains of this warm weather, but we can also anticipate the vibrant and colorful days of autumn that lie before us. What bounty the changing seasons give us.
Today, fog and rain shroud this world with wonder and mystery. You may live your life trying to solve all the puzzles, but if that is your focus you may miss enjoying the wonder of it all.
This posting is intended primarily for my teacher friends and former students. I have always enjoyed seeing this majestic and unique pine tree as I drive to school and today is the first day of school, but this year is different for me. Since I have retired from the classroom I will not be driving by this tree every day, I will miss it. But that is not all I will miss.
I must confess that I will miss seeing my co-workers and students on this day (but I won't miss all the other flotsam that currently clutters much of the educational process nowadays). I wish for you the best. Enjoy the journey. Teacher, student, or whatever you are doing today - I hope you can and will ask yourself this question everyday: "What did I learn today?" I may not be in the classroom, but rest assured, I intend to keep on learning. |
