What is happening to our nation? Recent changes in the way our nation’s immigration laws are being enforced causes young children to be forcibly separated from their parents (many who are coming to this land seeking asylum) and placed into detention centers and camps. There is no honorable justification for such a policy that separates these families. What we are doing as a nation is morally reprehensible. We can take no pride in this.
But what can we do? We can make our voices heard. We can tell each other that such policy is wrong. We can contact our elected leaders and demand they take action to change such policy. This policy could be changed within the space of 24 hours, if the current administration chooses to do so. No new laws would need to be passed. We must demand this happen. History will judge our nation by our action and inaction in this hour. Will we stand up and protect the lives of these children? Or will we watch in silent complicity? It matters not who one voted for in the last presidential election - this is a moral issue. We must speak up. Since some of our political leaders have used the Christian Scriptures in an attempt to justify their policy, I have no qualms about responding in kind: “Speak up for people who cannot speak for themselves. Protect the rights of all who are helpless.” Proverbs 31:8 These children and parents are helpless at the hands of our government, we must speak for them!
